Tuesday 17th April 2012 – walking ***** sunny periods :)

Woke to blue skies and after breakfast went and bought some bread, milk and apples at the little shop. We set out along the path leading to the metal structure the vultures were sitting on and flying near the other day. It was a lovely 2 hour walk through the village and up the hill but there were no vultures at that point but we did have a flock fly right over our heads :) Walked back and took our picnic up the very hard to climb rock with a ruined castle above the village. We had a wonderful view of the gorge we walked yesterday and were sheltered from the breeze by the ruin walls. Ate lunch and read our books for a while but it got a bit chilly so we returned to the van for a cuppa. After a rest we set out to walk to the Carrefour de la Barre and the Plateau de Suech. We didn’t really know where either of these was but it said it took about an hour to get there so it sounded good to us! We walked up and up towards the rocky cliffs high above the village where the vultures had decided to soar and land this afternoon. We watched them through binoculars landing on the rocky ledges. When we got to the Plateau there was a sign up to the Barre Catalan and we decided to see if we could get up there and get closer to the vultures. In true French style the path was marked with a yellow line on various rocks and took you right to the edge of the cliff! – Mag was terrified Mr. Camera man – me :) was going to go over the edge!! – this has been quite a feature of this holiday!! We were well rewarded because as we approached the highest point 10 of these enormous birds took off and flew right over our heads, two seemed to come to a halt in the air and have a really good look at us! Through my binoculars I felt like I could reach up and touch them – it was a real pinch yourself moment – again!! We went right up to the sign on the edge and sat there watching the remaining vultures soar above and below us. We finally had to give up as we needed to get back down to the village before it got dark. So our day of ‘resting’ ended up having nearly as much walking as yesterday but we can’t sit still and really love it here so much it would be a waste!
Could be time to move on tomorrow – this is the first time we have stayed in the same spot three days running but it is a wonderful area and well worth a visit!!!
